How important is food to life! And when I say food, I mean quality food; being pesticide, insecticide, herbicide, antibiotic, hormone, preservative, chemical and GMO-free. No one needs any of these exogenous substances in their body right?! And what are we feeding our kids? Isn’t it scary that this generation of children will be the first to possibly not live longer than their parents. NOW is the time to act! Things need to change! So today I’ll go over the ingredient list of a popular Valentine’s day candy, and the only conclusion to make is that it’s scary! Please read labels to make the best possible choices!
Recently, I was speaking to a friend of mine about the impact foods have on our bodies, specifically negative effects on children’s behaviours and she just couldn’t believe that foods could be that negative and be that much of a trigger! Her surprise caught me off guard and I thought to myself that maybe a lot of people feel the same way she does! Maybe people just don’t know the extent of the negative effects on the body of chemical foods, specifically artificial colourings and flavours, as well as processed and sugary foods.
So here is the ingredient list to a popular candy and just a few of the problems with it:
Sugar: is addictive, creates blood sugar irregularities leading to other chronic illnesses, feeds cancer cells, contains empty calories void of any nutrients, gets stored into the body’s fat cells.
Corn syrup: causes weight gain, is cancer causing, stresses the liver and creates fatty liver, leads to diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, leaky gut and heart disease, etc.
Artificial flavour: are flavour enhancers containing unwanted chemicals and additives
Sunset Yellow FCF: is derived from petroleum, is banned in some European countries, can lead to vomiting and nausea, can cause intolerances or allergic reactions as well as hyperactivity and tumor growths
Allura Red: leads to organ toxicity, contains aluminum, is carcinogenic and can cause migraines, upset stomach, nervousness and inability to concentrate
Tartrazine: contains benzene, a known carcinogen, and possibility of asthma, headaches, hives, skin rashes as well as hyperactivity and allergic reactions can occur
Brillant Blue FCF: possible carcinogen, has been linked to learning and behavioral problems, it has been banned in most European countries and is made from coal tar.
WHY ARE WE FEEDING THIS TO OUR CHILDREN?!?
There are alternatives to conventional candy, and I’m not saying they’re perfect, but they are a better choice. See the image below for brand and ingredients of YumEarth organic pops.
To end, here are some facts about food processing. What happens to food when it’s processed? In foods, chemicals are added to foods in three ways. The first is an intentional additive that becomes an ingredient in the food. The second is chemicals added during processing which can contaminate the food even though they weren’t added, they’re used in packaging and can leach into the foods. Third are the silent additives, which are the pesticides, herbicides, chemicals in water and air, antibiotics and hormones fed to the animals to name a few.
